The BEST elevators I remember when growing up in the early 60s were the antiques that were in use in the old Holthausen's Department Store in Union City, NJ.....these were the old-time ones with operators and folding gates. These used to hum and whine and would "CLUNK" loudly when they stopped at the desired floor. The office building at 80 Wall St (where my doctor was once located)still has (as of last year) the old-type with the folding gates (and still are manned)......I heard that there used to be old-type elevators way uptown on the IRT and IND at certain stations (such as the IND stations at 181st St and 190th) wish I had rode those babies when they were still in use!
