Probbably a function of how the service company tunes each one. Some companies in NYC will go for high acceleration rates, others will go for the damm smoothest ride you've ever experienced. The latter is popular in buildings with a lot of old people in them.

Ironic then, that the Sears Tower is all offices, while the Hancock Center is about two-thirds residential. You'd think a residential building would have smoother elevators. (Not that I'm complaining, mind you.)
