Probbably a function of how the service company tunes each one. Some companies in NYC will go for high acceleration rates, others will go for the damm smoothest ride you've ever experienced. The latter is popular in buildings with a lot of old people in them. They litterally won't shut up about how smooth the thing is. The real good ones will get them set up so the brake doesn't drop until the car's totally motionless. You don't feel ANYTHING then. A few even delay the drive on until the brake's released.

Some places like the ultra smooth feeling, others like the 'going there' feeling. With today's AC frequency drives, you can get whatever you want.

High speed stuff is fun because at those speeds, the slow down distances become really big, thus you need multiple speeds for short runs, etc.
