The best old elevators I remember were in A&S on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. They still had operators there about 8-10 years ago that would announce what was on each floor. "This is the 5th Floor - Baby apparel, electronics......". It was great. I remember one operator that really "loved" his job, he was very theatrical about it. He had a New Orleans accent, and couldn't be funnier as he announced what was on each floor.
They also had these great old escalators, with etched glass sides. What is in the old A&S? Is it still a department store, or anything? I wonder if those old escalators or elevators are still there in whatever is in the building now. I haven't been there since the last time I rode the escalators and elevators when it was A&S about 10 years ago.
