Oh man! I haven't seen a photo of them either before GOH! I remember when the R40, R40M, and R42's started showing up on the M with the blue doors. They were all cleaned up from grafitti, and they gave them a fresh coat of paint and blue doors. I remember thinking how good they looked and that it was a shame that it wouldn't last (I was proven wrong).
One distinctive feature at that time (and you are right, it was the spring of 1987 that they showed up there, just before the R16's showed up again for their last stand) was that they started selling an entire car of one type (brand) of ad. It is seen regularly now, but back then it was pretty strange to see. Between the clean trains, the blue doors and the entire car with the same themed ads it was like walking into the twilight zone.
