The higher altitutudes of the Denver area require planes to use more runway length, hence the longer runways. Many times jumbos will take off on considerably shorter runways in coastal cities, such as 747's at Newark that start at the displaced thresholds with about 8700 ft. left for takeoff if memory serves correct. In fact, JFK has very long runways 13/31 but the displaced thresholds cut them down by about a third in terms of what's actually used.
