Jordan has had the benefit of nearly 50 years of benevolent despotism in the form of King Hussein and now King Abdullah. Bring in someone less benevolent and that all goes away...
To be honest, if fair and free elections were held throughout Jordan, I'm not convinced King Abdullah, or even King Hussein if he were still alive, would win, if opposed by some extremist wacko.
