They (the pro-Palestinian intellectuals) also know that a pure Palestinian state, no matter how much international support and goodwill goes into it, will be run like a third-world out-of-service crapper, just like most of the rest of the countries in the region (and without the benefit of oil revenue, which helps immensely for those countries that have it). Whatever trappings of democracy are heaped upon it by the West and the UN will be quickly denounced as American/Israeli propaganda, and an (initially) popular dictator will rise to crush the fledgling democracy and rule the state as his personal fiefdom, a la Saddam Hussein.

On the other hand, Jordan has a large Palestinian population, yet it's a reasonably decent place with a partially democratic government and a better level of civil liberties than most countries in the region. And it has no significant oil wealth, which in any instance may be more of a curse than a blessing.
