I recall that prior to 9 AM you saw all QT and T trains with a destination of Coney Island (R27/30 and R32 trains). After 9 AM you would see an occasional T with a destination of Bay Parkway and some QT's heading only to Whitehall. Near 9:30 AM most T's were marked with destinations to Canal St which meant that they were going to the City Hall layup tracks.

I recall with clarity these details because I went to PS85 which is on 31st right next to the elevated tacks between Ditmars and Astoria Blvd. I had a classroom with the perfect view of the trains. No wonder I didn't pay attention in class a lot.
