I like your idea. However their might be some trouble working them in because the destination codes are also used to route trains to terminal stations. The only way I thing it could be done is to separate or add an override for the sign controls from the routing controls.

Then if that is the case, where is code 01 for SPECIAL going to send a train? Also, what code do they use for a train going to say, Greenbelt Yard?

Certain crossover stations will almost never be used for anything again, such as Van Ness. I only included the most likely unlikely turnbacks on my list. A station such as Van Ness could be signed as SPECIAL or RED LINE.
