Actually, and to correct myself, the first wholesale retirement and then scrapping of the R-10's started in the spring of 1983, mostly likely starting in the month of May from that year. As a matter of recorded fact, the last known R-10 consist to operate in IND "A" line service (not including those 1988 put-ins during the Williamburgh Bridge shutdown) was in April, 1983.

By the start of 1984, NYC Transit had already removed and scrapped about at least 60 R-10's. Not only did the agency got rid the very first one built and delivered #2950 (ex-1803), they also retired and junked car #3000, which some rail buffs had lamented that R-10 unit should have been saved as a museum car.
