But during the latter part of the 1970s when the deferred maintenance was taking its biggest toll, the AC on those cars, as well as on the 100 Slant 40s, 40Ms and the R-42s, started to go downhill. The ACs on the other cars seemed to get fixed occassionally (possibly because there were more spare parts for those cars), but by the end of the 1970s, the 10 R-38 cars did have AC units about as effective as some of the ones on the Flushing Redbirds right now.
