I was always curious at what point you'd hear the door locks release on the R-10s when they were intermixed with later cars. My guess would be when the conductor turned the door key or, in the case of the R-16s, when the levers were turned to "close" and before "open".

Conversely, I wonder if the doors on the R-10s would open first or later if they were placed in the middle of a mixed consist at the conductor's post. Something tells me this was never done.

Bottom line: although the door control pins were in the same locations on the R-10 electric portions as on later SMEE cars (and therefore fully compatible), the pneumatic innards threw off the timing in the grand scheme of things - trainline circuit-wise.
