You're right they did run far more TPH 50 years ago (I remember riding them), but their safety rules weren't as stringent as they are now. They let motormen routinely key by red signals without permission, and even if a train got tripped, the motorman would simply reset the trip cock and continue on his way (no drug/alcahol tests at the end of the line). Also they had far fewer timers.

You're assuming that keying by was an integral part of train operations 50 years ago. It wasn't. You're implying that resetting trip cocks was a common occurance. It wasn't. You're implying that timers reduce tph. They don't.
