You are absolutely right. I did miss something. The 40 should accerate slower than the 68 if everything else is the same. Since there is a weight and mechanical advantage difference, the 68 should accelerate slower. My years at streetcar university (operating) forgot ratios. Pinion is always smaller than the bull gear.

Weight and gearing always account for acceleration and running speed differences.
