Maybe we should have an NYPDPD to see to it that the NYPD obeys traffic laws when no emergency is present.
If I had a dime for every time I saw a cop car double-parked, with the engine off and nobody in the car, or parked in front of a hydrant or bus stop in front of the local deli or market so they can run in and get a sandwich or cigarettes or whatever... Now if any of us did that, one of those friendly "NYPD Traffic Enforcement" cruisers would come along and write us a nice fat ticket for $85, $105, or whatever the pound of flesh du jour may be.
It also seems that cops will go through red lights late at night if no cross traffic is present. On at least one occasion, I saw a cop approach a red light, flash the lights to get cross traffic to stop, proceed through the intersection, and turn the flashers off. Could they have been responding to a flashers-off call? Somehow, I doubt it, but I guess it's a possibility, but then again nobody investigated it (I guess I could have reported it...) so we'll never know.
