This is why many of the pro-Palestinian academics have been pushing the idea of "one state, two peoples" - they know damn well that if the whole area is brought under one umbrella state with the trappings of democracy (to be secured by the existing Israeli military, of course, since it's the only reliable security force to speak of in the area, and dependent financially on the previous Israeli government, since it's the only entity involved financially capable of doing this...), but with an Arab majority, so guess who gets elected? The (currently unnamed, for fear of reprisal) leader of Hamas.
They (the pro-Palestinian intellectuals) also know that a pure Palestinian state, no matter how much international support and goodwill goes into it, will be run like a third-world out-of-service crapper, just like most of the rest of the countries in the region (and without the benefit of oil revenue, which helps immensely for those countries that have it). Whatever trappings of democracy are heaped upon it by the West and the UN will be quickly denounced as American/Israeli propaganda, and an (initially) popular dictator will rise to crush the fledgling democracy and rule the state as his personal fiefdom, a la Saddam Hussein. At least now they can blame the Israelis for the crappy conditions experienced by the Palestinians; if they do it to themselves there's nobody to blame. Hence the one-state solution, which will also devolve into a cesspool, but then there will still be some way to blame it on the Jews.
