Yep, I remember that day well, and it was about October 1985 on the M for me. I remember the day and year because I was waiting to go to school at my home station (Forest Ave) with my first high school girlfriend one morning and I had never seen a non-grafittied train (besides R44-46's), and especially not on the M to that point. The train started pulling in the station, and I didn't even look up. Then she said, "Ooohh, look at the red train, how pretty". I did a double take, and I think all I was able to sceam or say was something to the effect of, "What the F*** is THAT?!?!".
You didn't see such things back then....and as usual, my pessimistic 1980's subway attitude was thinking, yeah, that'll last a day. - for once I was proven wrong.
