I remember being able to tell what train was leaving the 34th St/6th Ave station without being on the platform. A Darth Vader exhale, it was an R42 on the D or B (rush hours) A whistle meant an R46 F train or a JFK express. A hiss meant the R27's on the 6th Ave shuttle. I used to love that station because the mezzanine had a huge candy/nut stand and smelled of roasted cashews.
