"Mr. R-10" is correct when he says that the R-10 rehabilitation was not designed to extend the cars' life by seven years. As far as I'm aware, the program (which was NOT a GOH -- it was a level "E" overhaul) was funded out of the operating budget. Work was done at 207th Street Overhaul Shop, and all cars were to be completed by the end of 1985. Major items overhauled or replaced (according to a report in the September 18, 1985 NYCTA Committee Agenda) included:

Entire controller box
Air compressor
Motor-generator
Air brake system
All fans
All door operators
Air brake modification for composition brake shoes
Entire truck
Paint inside and out
Reflooring

As for what those at UTC thought, their thoughts were (as they are now) based on railfan romanticism, not on facts (I've been to enough of their meetings to know, as Bill Padron can attest). The FACT is, those cars were never very reliable even after overhaul. Neither were the GOH'd R-30s (which got an overhaul closer in scope to what the R-36s got than to what R-29 and later overhauled cars got, with much repairing and little replacing of components).
