Instead of a continuous rubber belt, it was composed of hinged wooden segments instead of stair risers. Slats attached to the wood segments kept one from slipping. One entered and exited very carefully. Obviously, it was cheaper than a regular escalator, and fit in with the aura of a super bargain basement.
