If I'm not mistaken, the electronics in the older buildings (which are in higher demand for residential real estate in Manhattan) can only be refit to a certian point, whereupon you have to replace the whole elevator system. The new elevators (like in the building I'm moving into, thank god) are designed specifically to "guess" which order to pick people up to optimize, and to accelerate and decelerate for top speed. Otherwise the feedback from the motor would blow away the controls. Luckily, too, I'll be on a middle floor -- like living in Midtown on an express stop. The elevators come to rest there rather than the lobby. I'm loving it.
