For speed and a spectacular glass enclosed pod type elevator try the Marriott Marquis on 45th & Broadway. The main lobby is on the 8th floor. The security guards don't seem to bother, as it is a giant hotel. You can also sit on the 8th floor and just look at the pods slipping up and down their outside shafts.
