It was a branch of the Q5A, and was designated Q5AB because it was alliterative (B for Bedell Street). Also, the 5A Huxley Street and 5AB Bedell Street were originally merged into a single service after 9 PM that ran from 168th and Hillside to 243 & Huxley via Merrick Blvd, Bedell Street, and the remainder of the 5A route to Huxley Street.
