That depends on what you call clean. In a large series of photos in my collection taken primaily along Broadway north of 60th Street, dated 1900, just prior to the start of construction of the first subway at the request of the IRT, the streets are filled with horse droppings. In one of the photos is a gentleman doing his "duty" using the old version of today's pooper scooper. I'd be led to believe that today's streets are far more pleasant to walk on, without having to wend your way through a maze of whatever Dobbin left behind.....
