Homeowners ticketed for $500 for an uneven sidewalk due to a tree the City planted without leaving enough room for it to grow.

Not a ticketable offense - they will send a letter giving you 30 (45?) days to fix the problem. If it is not fixed, they will send a certified contractor to replace the sidewalk and bill you for the work. The catch - the City's rate for concrete is cheaper than anything an individual could get AND they will not bill you for sidewalk replaced due to their tree roots. Therefore, when you get such a letter, the best thing to do is ignore it and let the City do the work - it's cheaper for the homeowner.
