According to what has been said and written, there is a mezzanine above the G line's Broadway station, and a good portion of it is closed. The S. 4th St. shell is above this mezzanine and is accessed through the closed portion. Since it was planned to be a six-track station with four platforms, direct access from street level would have been next to impossible. Either there had to be yet another mezzanine above the shell, or the shell is directly beneath street level and would have been accessed only from the mezzanine between the two station levels.
