But if a train going in the opposite direction running the full route is late, the train turning back short of the terminal has the potential to hold up the line. It would work in rare circumstances but it would not work well for regularly scheduled service. Blue Line trains at Rossyln can easily hold up inbound Orange service while they reverse.

True. But direction changes can be made from either side of the platform, terminate northbound run on northbound platform, southbound train enter station on southbound platform leaves station, train on northbound platform leaves going southbound through crossover. Mind you this would only apply when the interlocking is on the inbound end of the station.
