I wonder... WMATA can always open up the space between the tubes and add pocket tracks if there's room, correct? (U Street, Fort Totten, or Georgia Ave and Addison Road are what I'm thinking of)

You need roughly 1000’ (304.8m) of tangent easement with a grade no greater the 0.035 percent to build the pocket track and the interlockings at both ends. There is not enough room west of U Street (E03) I am not sure about east of the station. There is enough tangent easement north of Georgia Avenue-Petworth (E05) no room south of the station because the tunnels are stacked one on top of the other. Funny you mention Fort Totten (B06, E06) the original plans called for a pocket track on the surface east of the Fort Totten station on the E Route. The connector track from the Red line B Route connected to E route between the station and the pocket track.
