The original intention was to have those green GOH'd R-10's have a potential extended service life of up to five years, and to be kept as an interim measure when the R-68/R-68A's were all delivered and placed in revenue service, and nothing more. However, that was not the total case as the retirements for the green units started around March or April 1989.

Even the last two R-10's that came out of the overhaul program in February 1986 at 207th Street Shop (#3037 and #3169) only were in service for another three-and-a-half years on the road at best. The cost of each R-10 car GOH was about $65,000 each, or roughly about $7 million, and that came from NYC Transit five-year capital budget established at the time.
