Did the R10 cars have dynamic braking? If so, the camshaft controllers were probably having trouble reseting to their starting position at the end of the braking cycle. Whatever the cause, when the camshafts were in the wrong position when the train driver tried to start up the train, wouldn't/shouldn't the motor protection circuit drop the power connection back at the line switch or blow a fuse on the traction power feed into the control equipment box?

Also, if these trains were starting up ahead of the first couple of notches, wouldn't they be blowing the motor windings on a frequent basis?
