Double letters were dropped in the mid 80s. The feeling was that it had gotten too confusing, since there were some double-lettered routes which ran express at some point, such as the QB. Double letters originally indicated local-only service. I must admit it still seems strange at times to see trains marked C, G, and R instead of CC, GG, and RR, all three of which, BTW, have always been local routes.
