Because these route originally were branches of the same route# without the suffix. Examples:

Q17A (now Q30) branched off old Q17 (which ran via Kissena, H Harding, and Utopia Parkway, not 188th St).

Q44A (now Q46) was originally a branch of the Q44 Main Street route and only went east to about 188th St. or so prior to WWII. When extended later it kept the old # for a long time.

Q12A (now Q79)originates in the same place as Q12.

Q3A (now Q83) was a branch of the Q3.

Q4A (now Q84) branches off the Q4.

Q5A (now Q85) branches off the Q5.
