Staten Island is the only other borough that has it's unique numbering system, the first digit of any local bus line indicates the mode it travels:
4x (40, 42, 44, etc.)= travels along north shore only.
5x = North-South route utilizes both north and south shore
6x = Victory Blvd as primary route
7x = travels along south shore
9x = Limited bus route, all types but the second digit is usually the same as the local bus route it shares with.
